Kenyan consumers feel the pinch of high cooking gas prices

Kenyan consumers experienced a rise in prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) this week. According to Pavel Omieke, director general of Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, the increase in prices is as a result of high global demand during winter in the northern hemisphere, and is normal. More households in North America and Europe are using more gas for heating because of low winter temperatures.

Retailers in Kisumu City are quoting between Ksh900 and Ksh1200 for the 6kg cylinder refill, representing an average increase of Ksh15 per kilogram. Parents and households are feeling the pinch because this has come just after the December holidays whereas schools are reopening now.
